Today marks the first day of Pagumen in the Geez Calendar, as we anticipate the Orthodox New Year on Wednesday, September 11. This period lasts for five days, from today until Tuesday.
*Pagumen*, is the thirteenth month in the Eritrean calendar, has six days in the Year of John and five days in the Years of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. The Eritrean Orthodox Church recognizes it as an extra month, symbolizing the transition from the old year to the new, embodying hope and renewal. Its name comes from the Greek “Apagumene,” meaning “additional.”
This month focuses on themes of judgment and the second coming of Christ, highlighting the significance of prayer and fasting for spiritual growth. It also recalls the story of Judith, whose faith and obedience saved her people, encouraging diligence in the pursuit of salvation and overcoming life’s challenges.
